Leaders Barcelona will head to Madrid to face Atletico in the most anticipated clash in Round 8 of Spain’s La Liga. Despite Neymar’s departure, the failure to sign Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho and other targets in the summer, Barcelona appear to be high on confidence following a blistered start to the season, both domestically and in the Champions League.
Barca’s wins have been punctuated by Lionel Messi’s great form with the Argentinean superstar responsible for around 50% of the club’s League goals. Out of 23 goals scored in La Liga by Barca, Messi scored 11 goals while also providing 2 assists. Messi’s heroics have more than made up for Neymar’s exit and striker Luis Suarez’s early struggles with form and scoring goals.
Barca’s hosts Atletico Madrid will be relying heavily on their defensive game to restrict Messi’s movement and attempt to slow him down. Atletico have conceded 4 goals in the league, placing third best and only behind Barca’s and Sevilla’s defensive record. However, the likes of defensive linchpin Diego Godin appears to be slowing down while manager Diego Simeone has already used 7 defenders in the first 7 league games. In previous seasons, Simeone relied heavily on familiar faces to work together to anchor his defensive unit and for each to play in at least 30 league games a season.
Playing at home may seem as an advantage for a compact and physically imposing side such as Atletico, but Barca still have Messi. The Argentine hero delivered World Cup qualification in stunning fashion as he scored a hat-trick to overturn a 1-0 deficit in Ecuador. Simeone will be hoping Messi is tired from long distance travel but considering Argentina qualified for Russia 2018, and factoring in the great performance of Messi himself, it may turn out to be a case of too much Messi for Atletico’s defensive unit.
One factor which may work to Atletico’s advantage is the presence of midfield duo Koke and Saul Niguez, both of whom have played in all 7 league games this season. Up front, Atletico have struggled to find the back of the net with one exception, a 5-1 win at Las Palmas.
